Inge van Nistelrooij

Inge van Nistelrooij is an Associate professor Care Ethics and Maternity (Care) researcher at the University of Humanistic Studies, Utrecht and Professor by special appointment of Dialogical Self Theory at Radboud University Nijmegen (Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, department of Metaphysics and Philosophical Anthropology). In her research and education she focusses upon maternity, maternity care and midwifery, the formation and transformation of the identity of mothers throughout pregnancy, birth, and / or child care. For this she draws upon care ethics, maternal studies, French phenomenology, and the Dialogical Self Theory. A central theme remains self-sacrifice (Inge van Nistelrooij, ‘Sacrifice. A Care-Ethical Reappraisal of Sacrifice and Self-Sacrifice’ (dissertation, Peeters Leuven, 2015)). Additionally she is the coordinator of the Care Ethics Research Consortium (care-ethics.org) and co-founder and chair of the research network ‘Concerning Maternity’. Van Nistelrooij is an experienced teacher and trainer in ethics to a wide variety of care professionals in diverse care sectors. Drawing upon these experiences she seeks to inspire care professionals in popular publications on care ethics (like ‘Basisboek Zorgethiek’ (10th reprint, 2019) and ‘Zorgen doe je samen’).

Goal: developing an interdisciplinary body of knowledge on maternity, i.e. on the practices, identity, transition, experiences, and socio-political position of all those who are long term and substantially involved in caring for children from age -9 months before birth to adulthood. For this she aims to bring together and collaborate with researchers and those involved in maternal care, to give voice and impact to mothers. Since caring for future generations intrinsically involves the urge to sustain a livable planet, the voice of mothers is even more pressing today.

Specialties: ethics, care ethics, women’s and maternal studies, Dialogical Self Theory, ethical deliberation in institutional care, moral theology, French phenomenology, hermeneutics, philosophy of religion, spirituality.
